For REEFolution, this moment is close to home. For the past decade, we have worked along Kenya’s southern coast on science-driven, community-based coral restoration and conservation.
East Africa’s coral reefs are at a critical inflection point. The 2024 bleaching event made clear that coral restoration alone is no longer enough. The next phase must combine restoration with climate adaptation, including assisted evolution of corals.
Together with Kenya Red Cross and Wageningen University & Research and supported by Prinses Margrietfonds, we are convening a by-invitation workshop on coral reefs, resilience, and assisted evolution, bringing together a focused group to explore what adaptation-led conservation can look like in the East African context. We are collecting early expressions of interest from organisations and individuals who would like to be part of this conversation.
