Coastal and ocean-based sectors are increasingly vulnerable to climate and weather-related shocks, yet traditional insurance products are often too slow, costly or inaccessible to provide effective protection. As a result, post-disaster funding is frequently reactive and delayed, leaving coastal communities, small-scale operators and blue economy enterprises exposed to prolonged disruptions and financial losses. This session will explore the role of parametric insurance as an innovative risk-transfer mechanism that provides rapid, rules-based payouts triggered by predefined environmental events. Bringing together finance and conservation practitioners, the discussion will unpack how parametric insurance works, where it can be most effectively applied along the East African coastline and the role it can play in strengthening resilience, supporting ecosystem restoration and improving the investability of blue economy initiatives. Drawing on real-world examples and precedent transactions, the session will examine key lessons, enabling conditions and practical considerations for implementation at scale.
